Exaggeration...
Can be used to take an animation beyond reality. It allows animators to get away from the naturalistic movement and play around with the possibilites of what could be. Some forms of exaggeration can be used to create supernatural or surreal situations, change elements of the storyline and change the physical appearance of a character. An example of this can be seen below:
This is taken from the show "Fairly Odd Parents", and portrays extreme exaggeration as this character has completely changed his physical appearance within seconds. It adds humour to the scene as viewers don't really expect things like this to happen as it's nothing like reality. The idea that you can animate whatever you want, even if it doesn't make sense, is a great way of exploring the possibilities of what could be, and has been used much more within contemporary animation than the classic animation.
Above are two classic example of exaggeration within animation from Fleischers' Betty Boop.
The animations are very theatrical and have a lot of exaggerated movement within it, yet it still seems realistic compared to the example above. The form of exaggeration wasn't taken to the extreme in past animations, but was used to make movement dramatic and more engaging.
